My Sister Going to be perform in DELHI CWG`10

My sister name is Pruthvi Parikh.

Gujarat’s traditional fare will be displayed at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Delhi. A dance troupe from Ahmedabad, Sonal Garba Group, has been invited by the central government to perform Gujarati folk dances at a CWG event for five days.

“The Department of Culture has invited us to perform Gujarati folk dances from October 4 to 8. A group of 15 girls will perform at the CWG’s Saptarang-1 event,” said Mahendra Joshi, manager of the garba group.

The girls who will perform at CWG are school and college students.

With more than 300 performances across India and abroad, Sonal Garba Group has been training only girls for free for more than a decade now. The girls play male characters too. A joint effort by the Indian and Kuwait governments saw the group perform in Kuwait last September.

The group is registered with the culture departments of the state and Centre since 1988.

Director of the group Sonal Joshi also performs with the group at most events. Surprisingly, Joshi is 57 and still plays garba with the grace of a teenager. “I have been playing and teaching Gujarati folk dances for the past 25 years.

We focus only on traditional dances like garba, dandiya raas, hudo, tappni, beda (pot) garba, Rabari garba and other forms,” said Joshi, adding, “we will perform all these forms at the CWG.”

The duo — Sonal and Mahendra Joshi — have dedicated their lives for Gujarati folk dances and wish to share this talent with more girls in the state. “We teach only girls and don’t charge anything for it because for us it is devotion. We wish to share the same culture with the young generation girls,” they said.
